Resumo: O filósofo analítico norte americano Alvin Plantinga em seu seminal The Nature of Necessity e em God, Freedom and Evil visa construir uma defesa do livre-arbítrio contra a tese ateológica de que a existência de Deus é logicamente incompatível com a existência e quantidade de mal moral encontrados no mundo. Isto porque para muitos filósofos as proposições de que Deus é onipotente, onisciente e sumamente bom é logicamente inconsistente com a proposição de que há mal moral no mundo. Portanto, o objetivo do presente trabalho é apresentar, reconstruir e analisar a defesa que Plantinga faz do livre-arbítrio, assim como apresentar sua conclusão que, se for verdadeira, visa demonstrar, mediante a teoria dos mundos possíveis da qual Plantinga se utiliza, que a existência de Deus não é logicamente incompatível com a existência do mal no mundo como o fazem crer os ateólogos. Assim, aqueles que creem na existência de Deus, podem manter sua crença sem serem acusados de incorrer numa contradição, o que de fato é inaceitável, uma vez que é irracional aceitar proposições contraditórias em um conjunto de crenças qualquer.

Abstract: The American analytic philosopher Alvin Plantinga in his seminal The Nature of Necessity and in his God, Freedom and Evil, makes a free will defense against the ateleological thesis that the existence of God is logically incompatible with the existence and amount of moral evil found in the world. That for many philosophers the propositions that God is omnipotent, omniscient and wholly good is logically inconsistent with the proposition that there is evil in the world. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to reconstruct Plantinga’s defense of free will, as well as presenting his conclusion that, if true, seeks to demonstrate, using the theory of possible worlds, God's existence is not logically incompatible with the existence of evil in the world as the atheologians do believe. Thus, those who believe in the existence of God can maintain their belief without being accused of incurring in a contradiction, which in fact is unacceptable, since it is irrational to accept contradictory propositions in any set of beliefs.
