Abstract

The language of interests came to dominate the political discourse in the early modern period, particularly in England during the seventeenth century. This paper seeks to understand the reasons for using this language, and analyze its impact on modern republicanism, especially in the classical notion of mixed government, based on Marchamont Nedham and James Harrington political writings, perhaps the leading advocate of the republican regime established in England between 1649 and 1660.

Key words: Nedham, Harrington, Commonwealth, Interest
