Abstract

This paper discusses the resemblances and the differences between Amartya Sen's capability approach and Nancy Fraser's theory of justice as participatory parity. To this end, it reconstructs in their basic lines the theories of both thinkers and examines Fraser's critics to Sen, showing that they are as less convincing as the supposed advantages that Ingrid Robeyns points out in Sen’s theory. Finally, the paper highlights that the practical consequences of both theories are very similar, notwithstanding the fact that one is mainly a theory of development and the other is a theory of justice.

Keywords: Amartya Sen, Nancy Fraser, capabilities, participatory parity, theories of justice.
